2025 World Soil Day: Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities

Soil and Groundwater

To observe World Soil Day on Dec. 5, the administration conducts annual outreach and environmental education to increase public awareness of soil protection and encourage people to work together to safeguard urban soil and environmental quality.

What is World Soil Day?

World Soil Day is a United Nations international environmental day held every Dec. 5 to focus global attention on soil protection and sustainable use. Soil is a critical natural resource, serving as the foundation for agriculture and food security and maintaining ecosystem balance and environmental quality. Nations use this day to promote soil protection and encourage the public to safeguard land resources.

Theme for 2025: Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities

The 2025 theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities” emphasizes the link between urban environments and soil health. Healthy urban soil provides the following environmental benefits:

  • Enhanced land permeability to regulate rainwater and reduce flood risks
  • Urban temperature regulation to mitigate the heat island effect
  • Air quality improvement to enhance urban living environments
  • Increased carbon storage capacity to mitigate climate change

To educate the public on daily soil protection, the administration is holding a five-day quiz with prizes on the“Soil and Groundwater” Facebook pagefrom Dec. 1 to 5, 2025.

We also invite the public to incorporate soil-related environmental concerns into daily life and use the Taiwan Soil Information Systemto query soil data and place greater value on land resources.

Safeguarding soil together, building sustainable cities

Soil is the foundation of the natural environment and human life. The administration will continue soil protection and management through monitoring, information disclosure, and education to safeguard soil and groundwater quality. Collaboration between the government and the public is required to protect soil resources and secure a healthy, safe, and sustainable environment for future generations.
